Saint Francis Healthcare Receives Provisional Level 3 Trauma Center State Designation

Enhances Trauma Care in Wilmington and Northern New Castle County

WILMINGTON, Del.--()--Saint Francis Healthcare has been awarded a provisional Level 3 Trauma Center state designation effective July 18, 2016 by the Delaware Health and Social Services Division of Public Health. This designation enables Saint Francis to provide residents of Wilmington and Northern New Castle County with faster, more convenient access to appropriate trauma care.

As a community Level 3 Trauma Center, Saint Francis Healthcare's emergency personnel can now provide faster assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and necessary operations for trauma victims.

“In times of emergency situations, fast access to high quality appropriate care is critical to ensuring the best possible outcomes,” says Dr. Seyedmehdi Jadali, M.D., FACS, Trauma Medical Director. “Through this designation, the community can feel more confident and assured due to Saint Francis Healthcare’s ability to provide life-saving trauma care closer to home.”

Saint Francis made a multi-year investment in training, facilities and surgical and support staffing to provide patients with enhanced trauma care. Over the next 12 months, the hospital must successfully complete an American College of Surgeons site visit and be recommended for full Level 3 Trauma Center state designation by Delaware's Trauma System Designation Committee.

According to County Executive Tom Gordon, “Ensuring that patients receive prompt access to the care they need in emergency situations is critical and the designation of St. Francis Hospital as a Level 3 Trauma Center will help do just that. I am pleased that New Castle County Paramedics will soon have access to this beneficial alternative, particularly for residents in the City of Wilmington.”

Currently, Saint Francis Healthcare offers comprehensive emergency care services, boasting the shortest emergency room wait time in New Castle County and the largest private ambulance service in Delaware. The hospital is Joint Commission Stroke Certified and is a designated receiving center for cardiac and stroke patients in New Castle County.
