Technavio Announces Top Three Trends for the Global 3G 4G Devices Market Through 2020

LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest global 3G 4G devices market report highlights three key emerging trends predicted to impact market growth through 2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as something that has potential for significant impact on the market and contributes to its growth or decline.

To calculate market size, Technavio researchers have considered the number of unit shipments of mobile hotspots such as mobile hotspot routers and universal serial bus (USB) sticks that connect multiple devices.

“Some of the devices that fall under the scope of IoT are security systems, thermostats, electronic appliances, cars, and vending machines. Manufacturers of network equipment such as Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel Lucent are working to reduce latency in internet speed to achieve faster machine-to-machine (M2M) device communication,” said Sunil Kumar Singh, one of Technavio’s lead industry analysts for computing devices.

“This trend has also encouraged manufacturers of mobile handset devices such as Apple, Sony, and Motorola to come up with devices that support high-speed internet technology on a cellular network. Mobile devices are therefore transforming rapidly from EDGE and 3G to LTE and 5G technology,” added Sunil.

Technavio’s market research study identifies the following three emerging trends expected to propel the growth of the global 3G 4G devices market:

  • Emergence of next-generation wireless networks
  • Growing popularity of IoT
  • Upcoming 5G network

Emergence of next-generation wireless networks

Currently, network traffic is growing exponentially because of the increased popularity of mobile communication devices. It has resulted in the global deployment of next-generation wireless networks such as 3G, 4G, and 5G. These technologies offer wireless connections equivalent to home broadband connections. This increases the number of users accessing the internet from anywhere and at any given time.

Telecommunication product-based vendors are working with service providers to develop portable devices such as mobile hotspots, smartphones, and data cards that support these advanced wireless technologies. In 2010, Verizon launched the LTE in Rural America (LRA) program. This program was aimed to bring the benefits of 4G LTE technology to individual customers and business customers in rural America. The program also focused on providing technical support and resources to rural wireless companies for the development of 4G LTE network infrastructure. During 2010-2015, this program was hailed as a success in delivering a reliable network experience to 2.4 million people, covering more than 100,000 square miles. Twenty-one members participated in Verizon's LRA program, of which 19 have activated LTE networks.

Growing popularity of IoT

The various possibilities and applications of IoT helps translate an individual's personal preferences to electronic devices. It makes home appliances more responsive to external conditions. IoT is expected to play a crucial role in improving the quality of life at home and at the workplace. For instance, it will have coffee machines prepare coffee as soon as a person wakes up. Similarly, in a workstation, it will have file open up on its own as soon as a user sits in front of the system. IoT offers a smarter and modernized lifestyle to people with its timely solutions and self-operating ways. Philips' Wi-Fi enabled Hue lightbulbs are programmed to turn on and off via a smartphone or a tablet. IoT also enables users to use their smartphones as a key to lock and unlock doors from remote locations.

Both large and small companies can increase their efficiency, productivity, and profit by using IoT. The technology helps in efficient inventory control and managing customer queries. Thus, these advantages of IoT have prompted consumers to buy more devices that can connect to each other in a network and share information.

Upcoming 5G network

5G technology is currently in the development stage and is likely to be released by 2020. Many of the technologies used in 5G will also likely start appearing in 4G-enabled devices. 5G network has to perform better than other telecom network systems like 4G and 3G to gain a competitive edge. Many technologies such as instant video messaging along with voice calling will be used in 5G cellular services.

In 2015, Ericsson tested live 5G, achieving a 5 Gbps throughput. The standards for 5G technology has not been defined yet, but vendors like Ericsson and Huawei are likely to come with specifications such as throughput, speed, and advanced features such as M2M communication without any lag or buffering. Such features will be set as benchmarks for mobile communication to move from 2G, 3G, and 4G to 5G technology. Countries like North America, Japan, and South Korea will be the first to adopt 5G technology due to the high penetration (85%) of LTE in these countries.
