The report categorizes the global commercial aircraft cockpit display system market into three major product segments. They are:

  • MFD
  • PFD
  • EICAS

Global commercial aircraft multi-functional display (MFD) market

In 2015, the MFD segment dominated the global commercial aircraft cockpit display system market with a massive 85% market share. With the growing number of passenger aircraft, there has been an increasing need for enhanced MFD systems that provide mapping and weather information, altitude, pitch, yaw, roll, and attitude information, and improved ground proximity warning systems. Many MFD has the property that allows display of flight navigation route, traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS), next-generation radar (NEXRAD), weather radar, ground proximity warning system (GPWS), terrain avoidance and warning system (TAWS), and aircraft information on the same screen.

“Some vendors have already started improving their products that would propel the market during the forecast period. For instance, Honeywell Aerospace developed the low-cost enhanced ground proximity warning system, which provides the pilot with a map of nearby terrain with different color codes according to terrain’s elevation. Audible and visual alert systems are integrated with these systems for the prevention of collision with terrain or obstacles,” says Abhay Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for aerospace components research.

Global commercial aircraft PFD market

The PFD systems gained importance by providing the pilots with reliable information about altitude, airspeed, vertical speed, and navigation along with automatic flight control system (AFCS), air pressure, and barometric readings. The PFD systems provides the following information to the flight crew:

  • AFCS mode display
  • Airspeed display
  • Altitude display
  • Attitude display
  • Heading display
  • Navigation display
  • Vertical speed display

In 2014, there were 5,000 wide-body and 15,000 narrow-body aircraft in service. In addition, more than 2,500 aircraft are expected to be delivered in Europe and North America in the next 20 years. The emerging regions in the airline market such as Asia, Central America, and the Middle East have twice the number of backlogs compared to that of Europe and North America, which are to be fulfilled in the future.

Global commercial aircraft EICAS market

Engine-indicating and crew alerting system (EICAS) is an essential component of a glass cockpit system, software-driven electronic displays have replaced the obsolete analog gauges, and crew-alerting systems (CAS) have replaced the old annunciator panels. EICAS improves the situational awareness of pilots by enabling them to view complex information in a graphical format and also by alerting them about hazardous situations.

For example, if an aircraft engine begins to lose oil pressure, the EICAS generates an alarm, switches the display to the page with the oil system information, and outlines the low oil pressure data with a red box. Many levels of warnings and alarms can be set which is not possible with traditional round gauges. “Proper care must be ensured while designing EICAS to ensure that the pilots are always provided with relevant information. Such advantages have pulled many investments and will drive the market over the next four years,” adds Abhay.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:
