Subcommittee Examination of Privacy Rules is Critical, Says CTA

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--The following statement is attributed to Julie Kearney, vice president, regulatory affairs, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™, regarding the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law hearing on the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) proposal to regulate broadband privacy:

“We thank the subcommittee for examining the impact of the FCC's proposed privacy rules for broadband Internet service providers (ISP).

“It is critical that the FCC harmonize any ISP privacy rules with the Federal Trade Commission’s time-tested privacy framework. Innovation in the Internet economy relies on the beneficial use and sharing of consumer data among ecosystem players, which allows services — not just ISPs — to better serve consumers’ needs.

“Creating prescriptive privacy rules that cause one part of this ecosystem to operate differently from others would not only create conflicting results, but also lead to confusion among the very consumers these rules are intended to serve.”
