Technavio Announces Top Five Vendors in the Global Counter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Defense System Market from 2016 to 2020

LONDON--()--Technavio has announced the top five leading vendors in their recent global counter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) defense system market report. This research report also lists four other prominent vendors that are expected to impact the market during the forecast period.

Competitive vendor landscape

End-users of the global counter UAV defense system market are shifting their focus from quantity to quality. There is also an increased emphasis on cost-efficiency in military operations. Maintaining a balance between cost and quality and simultaneously providing upgrades and retrofit solutions to meet modern military needs pose a significant challenge to the vendors.

Also, amid negative economic conditions in Europe and defense budget cuts in the US, companies are facing high levels of uncertainty in the market. However, there has been a growing interest in emerging markets in APAC and the Middle East.

“Western military forces are mainly looking for sophisticated upgraded weapons. Meanwhile, developing countries in APAC and the Middle East are also strengthening their counter UAV defense systems with modern systems and capabilities. The existing major players in the market should identify the evolving trends and market shifts, and adopt them for long-term success and survival in the market,” says Abhay Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for defense.

Top five vendors operating in the global counter UAV defense system market

Airbus Defence and Space

Airbus Defence and Space was founded in 2014 after the restructuring of its parent company, Airbus Group. It is headquartered in Toulouse, France. In 2015, September, Airbus Defence and Space announced that it had developed a counter-UAV system that is capable of detecting, jamming, and eventually taking control of any unauthorized UAV for ensuring the security of military barracks, airports, and nuclear plants.

This new counter UAV defense system integrates infrared cameras, radio technology, and radar systems to trace the location of any UAV and assess its threat potential at ranges between 3.1 and 6.21 miles. The operational version of the counter UAV is expected to be available in mid-2016.

Blighter Surveillance Systems

Blighter Surveillance Systems was incorporated in 2015 and is headquartered in Saffron Walden, UK. The company provides electronic-scanning radar and sensor solutions that are used in different applications like coastal security, defense, critical infrastructure protection, and national border security forces.

In 2014, Blighter Surveillance Systems had established partnerships with two UK-based companies namely Chess Dynamics (defense systems and optical imaging solution provider) and Enterprise Control Systems (coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing [COFDM] video transmission systems provider) for developing a fully integrated anti-UAV defense system as a countermeasure to the growing threats of malicious UAVs.

Finmeccanica

Finmeccanica was founded in 1948 and is headquartered in Rome, Italy. The company engages in defense, aerospace, and security businesses globally.

The defense and security electronics business division of Finmeccanica, namely Selex ES, launched counter UAV systems, namely Falcon Shield at the event of DSEi 2015 on September 15, 2015. The Falcon Shield allows operators to identify, track, and neutralize security threats that are posed by slow and small UAVs.

Finmeccanica makes use of passive electro-optical and electronic surveillance sensors and the unique electronic attack capabilities of Selex ES ensure a fully integrated counter UAV measures.

SRC

SRC was founded in 1957 and is headquartered in Syracuse, New York, US. It is a not-for-profit R&D company that provides solutions to customers in the defense, environment, and intelligence industries. Some of its government customers are the US Air Force, the US Army, the US Marine, the US Navy, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the National Security Agency. The company operates 12 offices in the US.

SRC has developed a counter UAV defense system and demonstrated its capabilities in the event of 2014 Black Dart (a US government-sponsored event for showcasing counter UAV capabilities).

Thales Group

Thales Group was founded in 1893 and is headquartered in Paris, France. The company provides solutions primarily to the aerospace and defense industries globally.

Considering the growing concern over hostile UAVs, Thales Group is focusing on the development of counter UAV defense solutions to detect and neutralize intrusive and non-cooperative UAVs. The company has been working on developing ways ranging from noise signature detection to jammers, as well as laser-based solutions for countering unauthorized UAVs.
