Open Innovation: Thales Partners to Use Big Data for Smarter Transportation in Hong Kong

HONG KONG--()--The Thales Innovation Hub in Hong Kong will carry out two business analytics projects for smarter transportation applications.

Immense flows of data are currently at the disposal of Transport Operators, such as MTR in Hong Kong. The difficulty remains to leverage this data and use it effectively to improve the existing operating environment.

Through both of these projects, the Thales Innovation Hub aims to face the challenges of crowd management in transport facilities and the predictive maintenance of transport equipment in Hong Kong. Both of these projects are planned to be completed in 2018.

Big data platform for MTR

This first collaborative R&D project was awarded in January 2016 to Thales and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) by the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission. It marks the second milestone in data analytics for the Thales Innovation Hub. A Big Data platform with state-of-the-art technology will be developed using an adapted multi-sensor and data fusion strategy. The platform will be able to prototype smart transportation applications from diverse data sources, enabling current transportation challenges to be addressed, mainly near real time crowd monitoring solutions and predictive maintenance.

Train occupancy and platform crowding analysis

This first service contract, started in August 2015, is to provide a ticketing data analytics platform to MTR for analysing the situations of train occupancy and platform crowding in detail, in order to assist transport planning and reinforce marketing strategies.

The project scope is covering the current MTR rail network, as well as the forthcoming lines and stations.
