Medidata and Nestlé Partner on Mobile Health Study to Gauge Impact of Nutrition Combined with Physical Activity in Healthy Aging Adults

Medidata Powers Pivotal Science-Based, Nutritional Research in China; Expanding Adoption of Sensors, Wearables and Apps in Clinical Trials

NEW YORK--()--Medidata (NASDAQ:MDSO), the leading global provider of cloud-based solutions for clinical research in life sciences, today announced that its cloud technology platform and unified mobile health (mHealth) solutions are supporting a significant clinical trial conducted by Nestlé, the world's leading nutrition, health and wellness company. Underway in China, the two-year intervention study is evaluating the impact of nutrition combined with physical activity on mobility in healthy aging adults with joint discomfort.

“The research program, developed in collaboration with dedicated experts from Nestlé research centers in Lausanne and Beijing, is extending Medidata and Nestlé Clinical Development Unit’s well-established relationship beyond traditional clinical trials,” said Stephane Collet, head of clinical operations at Nestlé. “We are collecting more data from study participants than ever before and achieving more insight into the impact our nutritional products can have on improving people’s quality of life. Medidata’s transformative mHealth and cloud-based technologies provide powerful tools to aggregate and analyze information and turn it into actionable data that supports high-quality, science-based research.”

Dr. Rafael Crabbe, head of Nestlé’s Clinical Development Unit, added: “This project has given our clinical development unit new insights into the optimal design and execution of clinical trials. Using the Medidata Clinical Cloud gave us assurance that our research subject data were appropriately collected, stored and analyzed in a compliant manner.”

Launched in May 2015 by the Nestlé Research Center, part of Nestlé’s global R&D network, the clinical trial combines the consumption of a nutrition product with a physical activity program. Study subjects have been equipped with Garmin’s vívofit activity trackers to gather quantitative data on movement and mobility. Medidata’s ePRO (electronic patient-reported outcomes) app has also been provided to participants to complete quality-of-life questionnaires on smartphones or tablets. Objective data from the Garmin activity trackers and subjective, participant-reported diary data from the Patient Cloud app are ingested into the Medidata Clinical Cloud® platform. This secure, regulatory-compliant platform integrates data from the mHealth tools and provides real-time insight into subject behavior, compliance and response to therapy.

“Our exciting partnership with Nestlé is part of our ongoing efforts to show that mobile health tools can be incorporated into the highly structured world of clinical trials and bring great value to science-based research programs,” said Mike Capone, Medidata’s chief operating officer. “Wearables, sensors and apps gather real-time data directly from people participating in studies and can help paint a holistic picture of their activity and overall health and well-being. We’re proud that our mHealth expertise and capabilities are supporting Nestlé’s efforts to provide people with the nutritional support needed to live healthier, happier lives.”

Medidata is enabling top life sciences companies to conduct sophisticated Phase I–IV mHealth clinical trials worldwide through its platform of innovative cloud-based solutions.
