SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fifty-two Union Bank retail branches throughout California and Washington have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® Certification, the national symbol for energy efficiency, saving money, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting the environment. Union Bank has the highest number of branches earning this distinction among financial institutions nationally in 2015. In California, out of a total of 59 bank branches from all financial institutions that earned the ENERGY STAR certification, 47 were Union Bank. In Washington, Union Bank was the only financial institution to have ENERGY STAR-certified branches, where the bank maintains five.
“We are honored to again be recognized for our company’s dedication to protecting and preserving the environment within the communities that we serve,” said Union Bank Vice President and Environmental Specialist Kim Luu. “The ENERGY STAR certification designation is a proud achievement and signifies that our branches are among the most energy-efficient in the country, and highlights our commitment to sustainable business practices.”
The EPA’s ENERGY STAR program evaluates entire building energy data and normalizes for building use characteristics such as its age, size, location, number of occupants, and number of personal computers to determine a 1 to 100 score for certain space types. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR Certification, a building must have a score of 75 or higher, indicating that a building is performing in the top 25 percent compared to similar buildings nationwide.
“We are pleased to receive the ENERGY STAR certification for our 52 bank branches in recognition of our leadership in environmental responsibility,” said Union Bank Head of Retail Banking and Enterprise Marketing for the Americas, Pierre P. Habis. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe that caring for our environment is not only a civic responsibility but also an essential part of a good business strategy.”
The 52 Union Bank branches improved their energy performance by making cost-effective improvements to their buildings and through the efforts of local employees to use energy efficiently.

About ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 different kinds of products, 1.4 million new homes, and 20,000 commercial buildings and industrial plants that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Over the past twenty years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.
