O’Brien-Staley Partners Recruits Impact Investing Team

EDINA, Minn.--()--O’Brien-Staley Partners (OSP) announced today that it hired Matt Reilein as its Portfolio Manager and Carleen Rhodes as its Special Advisor for Fixed Income Impact Investing. Impact investing is the strategy of pursuing investments designed to yield both a benefit to society and advantageous returns to investors.

Mr. Reilein will lead Fixed Income Impact Investing after serving more than 15 years in roles at JPMorgan Chase, most recently as a Managing Director in Community Development Banking, where he grew the New Markets Tax Credit Group to over $5 billion cumulatively invested. He received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and a BS in International Politics from Georgetown University. In 2013, Mr. Reilein was named by Crain’s Chicago Business to its annual 40 Under 40 list of next generation leaders. After serving on the board of the non-profit Chicago Community Loan Fund for over ten years, Mr. Reilein became the Chair of the Board at the end of 2015.

“I’ve always been impressed by the firm’s innovation, leadership and core culture of fundamental credit analysis,” Reilein said. “I’m looking forward to building a business for OSP that focuses on credit opportunities at the top of the capital stack within established programs that benefit low-income communities, help striving families, and improve the environment.”

Ms. Rhodes will provide counsel and industry connections to OSP in the area of impact investing. She joins the firm after more than 30 years in the non-profit sector, including 12 years as CEO of the Saint Paul Foundation, the Minnesota Community Foundation and Minnesota Philanthropy Partners – a network of foundations with investable assets of $1.2 billion. She received her MA and BA in English from Minnesota State University, St. Cloud.

“Impact Investing is a hot topic among community foundations right now in both their boardrooms and investment committees,” Rhodes observed. “But, very few firms can creditably bridge societal purpose and financial performance. That’s what excites me about working with OSP as it directs private sector capital to thriving businesses in Low-to-Moderate Income (LMI) areas, striving families with first-time home purchases and reviving properties with energy efficiency upgrades.”

According to Mr. O’Brien Matt and Carleen “offer a wealth of experience, strategic insight and a vast network of personal and professional contacts to ensure that OSP meets its goals for fixed income impact investments. That’s why we recruited Matt and Carleen – the two most experienced and successful professionals we know in the space.”
