C.H. Robinson Opens Second Air Freight Screening Facility

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.--()--To better support air service in the Los Angeles area, reduce delays for customers, and improve tracking capabilities, C.H. Robinson announced today that the company has opened a new state of the art certified cargo screening facility (CCSF) in Carson, CA. This is the second CCSF operated by C.H. Robinson. The first facility opened on April 18, 2012, in Chicago, IL.

C.H. Robinson’s in-house screening facility includes approximately 20,000 square feet of warehouse space, state of the art screening machines, and a dedicated air freight team to screen air freight that moves through the facility. The facility is tied directly to Navisphere®, the company’s global technology platform, allowing customers to track their freight before, during, and after the CCSF. This adds a level of visibility that is often missing during the screening process.

In 2010, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) mandated that all air cargo be scanned to the piece level prior to loading on a passenger airplane, which is most commonly handled by the airlines or third party facilities. The level of scrutiny required can cause delays if resources and personnel have additional responsibilities—as is often the case for airlines and third party facilities.

“We’re excited about the new screening facility. Rather than relying on a third party to perform the required screenings on their schedule, now we can assure our customers that our trained experts are reviewing their shipments,” explained Tim Reiff, general manager, North America air freight. “The facility also features convenient airfreight doors that speed up the process. Once cargo is screened, it can be quickly transferred to or from the airlines.”

In order to become certified under the TSA’s screening program, C.H. Robinson’s CCSF had to complete a rigorous certification process. This included developing and sharing the facility’s procedures, protocols, policies, and other relevant data as well as a two-day site visit, walkthrough, and interviews with key personnel.

“Los Angeles is a strategic location for our new CCSF,” shared Matt Castle, director, global air services, “It’s a primary gateway for our global air service, as well as a key location for domestic air flights. The facility is a great opportunity for our shippers to gain visibility, ensure compliance, and secure protection for their global and domestic air shipments.”
