SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Quanergy Systems, Inc., the leading provider of LiDAR sensors and smart sensing solutions, today announced the world premiere of its solid state LiDAR sensor at CES 2016. Seamlessly integrated into the body of a Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Coupe, the S3 LiDAR sensor is being demonstrated live in the company’s booth #36065 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Quanergy’s S3 is the most compact 3D LiDAR sensor and is the fundamental component necessary for the emergence of autonomous vehicles that can maneuver in any environment, on highways or in urban areas. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the unit can be mounted behind a grill, inside a bumper, inside a side-view mirror, or behind a rear-view mirror. The S3 accurately creates a real-time long-range 3D view of the environment and provides the ability to recognize objects.
Proprietary solid state technology is the backbone of the S3. The sensor contains no moving parts, on a macro scale and a micro scale, resulting in the highest level of reliability and the longest lifetime. More compact than a small point-and-shoot camera, weighing less than 11 ounces, and having low power consumption, the S3 can be used in any application that can benefit from smart, capable, always-aware perceptive vision. Through the interaction of three main components – laser, receiver and signal processor – the S3 generates half a million point-cloud data points per second.
“The S3 enables autonomous vehicles to be a reality in the near future, and this sensor highlights how Quanergy is committed to innovation for improved safety, efficiency, performance and cost,” said Dr. Louay Eldada, Quanergy CEO. “The S3 is a disruptive development in smart sensing and is taking LiDAR usage in an exciting new direction where ubiquitous practical use is made possible in numerous applications. We will continue to make advancements in the technology.”
Beyond transportation, Quanergy’s S3 enables an expansion of LiDAR applications into more than 30 market verticals including terrestrial and aerial mapping, industrial automation, smart home and security.
“We are delighted to be a part of Quanergy’s S3 introduction at CES,” said Dr. Axel Gern, VP of Autonomous Driving at Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America. “Quanergy’s innovative technology has created a low-cost, robust sensor that delivers a performance aligned with our expectations. We look forward to working together with Quanergy on the future of autonomous driving.”
Quanergy and Mercedes-Benz formed a strategic partnership in 2014 to develop, test and deploy advanced LiDAR-based systems specifically designed to enable enhanced automotive safety and autonomous driving features.
Quanergy’s sensors will also be featured in live demonstrations in the Delphi and Nvidia booths at CES. Delphi will have the S3 incorporated into a Volvo XC90 in Booth 315 and Nvidia’s booth will feature a sensor in a Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV. Both booths are located in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
