New West Physicians Group Gains National Recognition for Delivering Quality, Affordable Health Care

Physician group improves diabetes care, cancer outcomes and breast cancer screening rates, expands mental health care to underserved

DENVER--()--A Denver-based physician group is making health care work for the patients, physicians and communities it serves, and gaining national recognition for its success in treating and managing diabetes, cancer and mental health.

Serving nearly 200,000 metro Denver patients, New West Physicians uses an innovative, team-based approach to deliver high-quality, affordable care using proven treatments and technology while achieving high patient and physician satisfaction.

The results have been so successful that the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) recently named New West Physicians as the national 2015 Acclaim Award recipient for group practices with fewer than 150 physicians. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in the delivery of care that is safe, effective, efficient, patient-centered, timely and equitable. It is the most prestigious quality award presented by the philanthropic arm of AMGA.

“From our inception in 1994, we have been dedicated to providing high-quality, evidenced-based care,” said Ken Cohen, M.D., New West Physicians’ Chief Medical Officer. “Our focus is on a culture of accountability and continuous improvement where providers spend the majority of their time caring for patients. Regardless of the changes taking place in health care, we are well poised to serve our patients now and in the future.”

New West Physicians’ diabetes and smoking cessation programs have already served as models for health care delivery, and the group’s “Bench to Bedside” program brings the latest evidence-based medicine directly to patients within 6 to 12 weeks. Eighty percent of the entire New West Physicians patient population has its blood pressure under control compared to the national average of 60 percent, and the breast cancer screening rate is 83 percent compared to the national average of 77 percent.

New West Physicians’ hospital readmission rates are also extremely low, with 30-day readmission rates of 6.7 percent for Medicare patients and 3.1 percent for commercial health care patients. The organization consistently delivers higher quality care at 12 to 15 percent below metro-average cost for commercial (private) patients and 28 percent below metro-average cost for Medicare patients.

The Acclaim Award honors organizations that are continuously learning, innovating and measurably improving the quality and value of care. New West Physicians recently accepted the Acclaim Award at AMGA’s Institute for Quality Leadership Annual Conference in Washington D.C.

“We are extremely proud of all the hard work and dedication put forth by each employee here at New West Physicians that has enabled us to achieve this distinction,” added Ruth Benton, CEO of New West Physicians. “We will continue to strive for excellence and deliver quality, patient-centered care.”

A summary of the specific steps that New West Physicians has taken and programs that it has initiated to continually improve patient care and outcomes, as listed in its application for the Acclaim Award, is available by contacting Barbara Mahoney, Director of Marketing and Public Relations.
