Counsyl Reaches 500,000 Patients Screened, Doubles Patients Served in Just Over One Year

Counsyl’s genetic counselors have logged more than 10,000 hours of counseling, illustrating growing demand for genetic screening and access to genetic counseling services to better understand results

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Counsyl, a health technology company that offers DNA screening for diseases that can impact women, men, and their children, announced today that the company has screened more than 500,000 patients, doubling the number of patients served since May 2014.

“Counsyl has experienced tremendous growth, and reaching this milestone is a testament to our dedication to make screening more broadly accessible,” said Ramji Srinivasan, co-founder and CEO at Counsyl. “We’re incredibly humbled that we've earned the trust of so many patients and physicians at critical times in their lives, and we're still in the very early stages of what's possible. We still have the opportunity to serve millions of people each year who are planning to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are at-risk for or newly diagnosed with serious cancers.”

To meet the growing demand for genetic screening, Counsyl has grown its staff 30 percent since June 2014. The company has also continued to increase accessibility for patients by working with more than 8,000 medical professionals, as well as increasing affordability. Counsyl’s payor network covers approximately 80 percent of patients with commercial insurance, and Counsyl offers an affordable self-pay option for those who are underinsured.

Since founding in 2007 and launching their first product in 2009, Counsyl’s genetic counselors have logged more than 10,000 hours of counseling, achieving an average satisfaction rating of 4.9 out of 5.0 for genetic counseling sessions. This puts Counsyl’s genetic counseling scale right in the ballpark of the 2014-2015 U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals for gynecology. Each Counsyl screen includes a consultation with a board-certified genetic counselor who is available on-demand to patients, instead of requiring them to wait days or weeks for an appointment. Counsyl’s genetic counselors help patients understand results and work with physicians to determine next steps for each patient.

Counsyl offers three types of genetic screening, all of which require a doctor’s prescription. The Inherited Cancer Screen helps patients learn about their risk of developing certain preventable cancers, such as breast and ovarian cancer or colon cancers associated with Lynch syndrome. The Family Prep Screen looks at a couple’s DNA for serious inherited diseases that they can unknowingly pass on to their future children. With access to this information, couples can better prepare as they look to grow their family. The Informed Pregnancy Screen provides early insight into a baby’s genetic development using non-invasive methods and can be performed in the first trimester.
