Annual Bojangles’® Golf Classic Raises More Than $500K for MDA Pediatric Research

Sponsorships and matching funds will help advance genetic therapies

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--()--Bojangles’, Inc. (NASDAQ: BOJA) today announced that through the generous support of its community friends and business partners, the Company has raised more than $500,000 for the Charlotte chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association during its 17th annual Bojangles’ Golf Classic tournament held on Monday, September 28, at Providence Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This annual fundraising event caps off an already successful fundraising year for Bojangles’, one of MDA’s top sponsors in the Carolinas. In conjunction with the Company’s in-store fundraiser each March, the 17 year old golf tournament has helped raise millions in support of pediatric Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy research at the McColl-Lockwood Laboratory at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC).

“Support from the annual Bojangles’/MDA Golf Tournament, along with related matching funds, has amounted to over $2.3 million from 2009 to 2014,” said Scott Kerr, President, Carolinas Healthcare Foundation. “These funds go directly to our local McColl-Lockwood Laboratory at CMC, which is probably the leading facility in the world for limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) research. Funding from this tournament has had a huge impact in allowing our Lab to advance genetic therapies for LGMD to the point where therapeutic trials in human patients are likely to occur in the not-too-distant future.”

“The Bojangles’ Golf Classic to benefit MDA has been an important part of our organization for seventeen years, and we are thrilled to bring together many of Charlotte’s most caring people for this very important cause,” said Clifton Rutledge, Bojangles’ President and CEO. “All the funds we raise as part of this wonderful event will support breakthrough research. We are proud to join all those in the fight to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for MDA.”

This year, 144 golfers took to the links at Providence Country Club. A number of local celebrity guests and MDA families also attended the event. Following the 18-hole tournament, participants gathered for an awards reception—which included both a silent and live auction. The auctions and raffles, which featured such one-of-a-kind items as a Hootie and the Blowfish autographed guitar and fan experience packages with Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Carolina Panthers, the Charlotte Hornets and Darlington Raceway accounted for some of the funds raised for MDA.

“MDA is extremely grateful for Bojangles’ partnership through their annual golf tournaments,” said Amy Meyers, Executive Director, Charlotte chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. “Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to finding a cure for all neuromuscular diseases affecting our community today.”
