National quality organization calls out Anthem plan with top ratings

WALLINGFORD, Conn.--()--NCQA’s Private Health Insurance Plan Ratings 2015-2016 rated Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield with a 4.5 out of a 5, making it the top rated plan in Connecticut. Anthem earned the ratings from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA publicly released its 2015-16 annual Health Insurance Plan Ratings at www.ncqa.org/rankings.

“We are pleased that Anthem is recognized for health care quality not only by excelling in healthcare standards, but also in gaining such favorable responses from our members,” said Jill R. Hummel, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. “This is truly a team effort and everyone on the Anthem team deserves recognition for the good work they do in creating and supporting access to the highest quality and most effective and affordable healthcare for our members.”

The plan was evaluated based on three areas -- consumer experience, prevention and treatment. Anthem received scores of 4.5 for consumer experience and prevention, and 4 for treatment.

The clinical quality measures include prevention and treatment measures, which are a subset of the NCQA Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set 1 measures. Prevention measures assess the proportion of eligible members who received preventive services, like prenatal and postpartum care, immunizations and cancer screenings. Treatment measures assess the proportion of eligible members who received the recommended care for conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and mental illness.

Consumer satisfaction measures come from the HEDIS survey measurement set—Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems 2—a validated survey overseen by the Agency for Health Care Quality. Consumer satisfaction measures assess patient experience with care, including their experiences with doctors, services and customer service.
