Coast Guardsman Honored by Legion for Community Service

BALTIMORE--()--U.S. Coast Guard Yeoman 2nd Class Casey B. Lawrence was awarded The American Legion’s 2015 Spirit of Service Award on Sept. 1 during the organization’s 97th National Convention in Baltimore.

A Murfreesboro, Tenn., native, Lawrence joined the Coast Guard in 2010 and is currently stationed at the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Lawrence serves as president of the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Enlisted Association and as the volunteer coordinator for the Base Elizabeth City Complex, which coordinates volunteer efforts for seven commands. In 2014, Lawrence volunteered more than 550 hours. She conducted an Angel Tree event and Thanksgiving basket giveaway for junior enlisted guardsmen, volunteered at local food banks, helped feed families in need, organized a Martin Luther King service day event and more.

American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm and Medal of Honor recipient Ryan Pitts presented the Spirit of Service Award to Lawrence during The American Legion’s 97th National Convention at the Baltimore Convention Center. She was honored alongside representatives from the other four armed services at the annual business gathering of the 2.2 million-member Legion, the nation's largest veterans organization. Helm presented Lawrence a membership in The American Legion as part of the award.

“I’m very excited and very proud,” Lawrence said. “I cannot wait to talk to our Coast Guardsmen in Elizabeth City about The American Legion.”
