Westmoreland’s Jewett Mine Wins Safety and Reclamation Awards

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--()--Westmoreland Coal Company (NasdaqGM:WLB) announced today that the Jewett Mine was presented with two awards: the 2014 Sentinels of Safety Award from the National Mining Association and the 2015 Railroad Commission of Texas Coal Mining Reclamation Award.

The National Mining Association’s Sentinels of Safety Award recognizes and honors outstanding mining facilities based on size and mining method. The Jewett Mine was recognized in the large surface coal category for its exemplary performance in 2014. The mine completed 836,853 hours without a loss time incident, which is 160,000 hours more than the next mine in its category.

Additionally, the Railroad Commission of Texas presented the Reclamation Award to the Jewett Mine, recognizing Jewett for its innovative, solar-powered water well that supplies portable irrigation used for re-vegetation of reclamation acreage planted with trees and shrubs. This is the fourth year in a row that Jewett has received this award.

“We are proud of all of our employees for their commitment and dedication to health and safety, and the protection of the environment,” commented John Schadan, Westmoreland’s President. “These two special awards recognize the outstanding achievements of the Jewett Mine team and we would like to express our appreciation to the National Mining Association and the Railroad Commission of Texas for this recognition.”

“Safety and environmental excellence are the cornerstones of the Westmoreland foundation of value. Receiving the Sentinels of Safety Award along with the 2015 Railroad Commission of Texas environmental award are tremendous accomplishments that reflect our mine employees commitment to those values. I am very proud of the entire Texas Westmoreland team for their outstanding dedication and effort,” stated Denny Kingsley, General Manager of Jewett Mine.
