DALLAS--()--Researchers at the University of Chicago Medical Center recently released a study showing that aggressive surgical procedures tend to extend the lifespan of people suffering from advanced mesothelioma, the mesothelioma law firm of Baron & Budd reports. The study was published in the medical journal Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

The form of surgery analyzed by the researchers is known as pleurectomy/decortication surgery (PD). In the procedure, the pleural lining of the lungs is removed, as well as any tumors that are visible – either in the lungs or the areas that surround them. It also involves resection of the diaphragm (either complete or partial). Afterward, prosthetics are used to help restore the portions of the diaphragm that were altered.

There were 36 participants in the study who had the procedure performed. They were then evaluated twice afterward to gauge their quality of life – 4-5 months after the surgery and then 7-8 months after the procedure. All of the participants who were suffering from advanced mesothelioma at the time of the surgery showed substantial improvement in their quality of life when evaluated.

“While this is an aggressive surgical procedure, the results of the study are very encouraging,” said Russell Budd, president and managing shareholder of the mesothelioma law firm of Baron & Budd. “The study shows that PD surgery may provide patients with significant long-term benefits.”

There is only one known cause of mesothelioma – the ingestion or inhalation of asbestos fibers.
