Department of Veteran Affairs Continues Expansion of DecisionSim, Inc.’s Simulation-Based Learning Platform

Nation’s largest healthcare system broadens use of ‘real-world’ teaching model to improve decisions that impact patient outcomes

CHADDS FORD, Pa.--()--DecisionSim, Inc., the leading provider of simulation-based learning platforms, announced today that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continues to expand the DecisionSim program to provide assessment, education and training for its healthcare professionals and staff. The growth of the partnership between DecisionSim, Inc. and the VA—the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in the U.S., providing care to more than 9.1 million veterans—can help raise the standards for healthcare education among hospitals and other patient care facilities around the country.

Simulation is a standard practice to improve the safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare services. It can involve role-play and other activities imitating or representing a range of medical situations or processes. DecisionSim leverages adult learning and gaming concepts in simulations that replicate the daily challenges of healthcare interactions. It is the only simulation-based learning platform using a real-world, data-driven, virtual experience to improve learners’ knowledge and application of diagnostic, procedural, and communication skills that impact clinical decision-making.

In 2011, the VA launched a pilot program using DecisionSim as part of the VA’s healthcare-simulation assessment and training initiative. Based on the success of the pilot, in 2012 the VA signed a five-year, enterprise-wide contract providing all VA employees access to DecisionSim. Since then, the VA has incorporated DecisionSim into the broader Employee Education System (EES) group, benefiting a wide range of clinical and non-clinical employees. EES has applied the platform for research, women’s health, palliative care, residency training, nurse education, and staff training, among other initiatives. Overall, more than 35,000 VA employees have received training through the program. The VA has exercised the first three option years of the initial 2012 contract. Its investment in DecisionSim will exceed $10 million if all of the options are exercised.

“We are pleased the VA is increasing its use of DecisionSim to help meet the simulation-training needs of its healthcare professionals and other stakeholders,” said Bob Yayac, CEO of DecisionSim, Inc. “We believe the platform’s demonstrated success at the VA will translate to a variety of clinical settings, helping organizations improve patient outcomes in a continually evolving and complex healthcare system.”

DecisionSim Inc.’s primary partner for the VA partnership is Catapult Technology, Ltd., an award-winning, customer-oriented provider of full-service management consulting and information technology (IT) solutions.
