Truven Health Analytics to Provide Population Health Analytics to North Carolina Hospital Association

Clinical, Operational and Financial Analytics, Across the Care Continuum, to Be Delivered to North Carolina’s Health Systems and Accountable Care Organizations for Performance and Quality Improvement

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--()--Truven Health AnalyticsTM, a leading provider of healthcare data and analytics solutions and services, has extended its long-standing relationship with the North Carolina Hospital Association (NCHA), to support the state’s health systems and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) with advanced population health analytics. Under the agreement, Truven Health will develop, manage and host an analytically enhanced data mart, giving NCHA hospital members the ability to receive expanded state-wide reporting and analytic insights for use in disease monitoring, clinical benchmarking, hospital comparisons and performance improvement.

Truven Health Analytics offers a wide range of healthcare solutions – which include analytics for population health management and clinical decision support – to healthcare providers, state and federal government customers, large employers, health plans, and life sciences companies. With the expansion of this relationship, Truven Health will now provide NCHA with a sophisticated population health management solution for analytics, across the care continuum, to help improve financial, operational and clinical performance.

“Hospitals and provider networks have undergone fundamental changes to the way they must operate as they move to value-based care and away from volume, pay-for-service models, in the age of healthcare reform,” said August Calhoun, general manager of provider solutions for Truven Health. “We look forward to working with NCHA to assist hospitals in North Carolina as they approach enterprise-wide evaluation of key performance drivers and metrics, map those against the impact of industry changes, such as payment model innovations, and shape their strategies for growth in the future.”

Truven Health will create an analytically-enhanced data mart, aggregating data from disparate sources, normalizing, and applying industry leading business intelligence tools for reporting and predictive analytics. This will enable NCHA staff to support its member hospitals to identify gaps in care, track trends in consumer and patient behavior and account for out-of-network patient visits – challenges faced by many ACOs and health systems. Specific data sets will include:

  • Clinical Data: Admission discharge transfer (ADT), biometric, laboratory result observations, medication orders, logical observation identifiers names and codes (LOINC) and transcribed reports. Clinical data will span the care continuum.
  • Administrative Data: Hospital billing data provided by NCHA member hospitals which includes inpatient, outpatient and emergency data; as well as clinically enhanced, risk-adjusted data compiled by Truven Health and to which industry leading methodologies such as Expected Complications Rate Index (ECRI) and Risk Adjusted Mortality Index (RAMI) are applied.

“For more than 25 years, NCHA has enjoyed a productive relationship with Truven Health that has yielded great benefits for our members,” said Bill Pully, NCHA president. “As we evolve to meet the changing needs of the healthcare environment, these expanded tools for data collection and analysis are essential to ensuring our members’ ability to meet the tenets of healthcare’s triple AIM: improving the individual experience of care; improving the health of populations; and reducing the per capita costs of care.”
