NAFCU Opens Membership to Federally Insured, State-Chartered Credit Unions

Historic change to strengthen credit union advocacy at the federal level

MONTRÉAL--()--The National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) announced that it is opening its membership to federally insured, state-chartered credit unions effective immediately, marking a historic move to advocate on behalf of more credit unions and strengthening the association’s impact on federal issues. The NAFCU Board of Directors announced the change during the association’s business meeting at NAFCU’s 48th Annual Conference and Solutions Expo today in Montréal.

“I am honored to share this exciting news, which marks a new day for our association,” NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger said from Montréal. “The NAFCU Board made this unanimous decision because our industry is rapidly evolving, and in a changing marketplace, credit unions are seeking more from their advocacy organizations. We’ve heard that message and are ready to rise to the challenge.”

For nearly half a century, NAFCU has represented federal credit unions nationwide before key policymakers and regulators in Washington, including Congress, the National Credit Union Administration and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Having led the fight for federal share insurance for credit union members, NAFCU has long recognized that its advocacy efforts at the federal level have an impact on all credit unions, both federal and state-chartered.

“This announcement is a natural evolution of NAFCU’s mission and supports our goal to help all credit unions with federal issues by becoming a stronger, more impactful organization,” said Ed Templeton, chair and director-at-large of the NAFCU Board of Directors. “This unanimous decision included enthusiastic support from our board because it will further NAFCU’s ability to provide the absolute best in member service and choice to all federally insured credit unions.”

It is business as usual for staff at NAFCU’s headquarters and for the association’s members. NAFCU currently represents numerous federally insured, state-chartered credit unions that were grandfathered into membership after converting from federal to state charters. Federally insured, state-chartered credit unions will join NAFCU as associate members, securing the opportunity to have strong federal representation.

“As I reach out to credit unions in the months ahead, I look forward to meeting with current and potential members alike to hear about each organization’s needs and how we can best serve them,” said Berger. “The association is well-equipped to handle this change, and I am thrilled to be a part of a growing, dynamic organization that is taking the long-term view of being a leader for credit unions across the country.”
