Imation Survey: End Users Unsure Their High-Value Data is Secure

Imation’s Secure Data Movement Architecture™ helps organizations devise a holistic approach to manage and protect high-value data from tampering, destruction, loss or leakage

OAKDALE, Minn.--()--Imation (NYSE:IMN), a global data storage and information security company, today announced the results of a recent Imation and TechValidate™ survey of more than 300 IT end users around the world. While the survey shows that 70 percent of organizations have corporate policies governing where high-value data should be stored, and 69 percent of organizations have a solution in place for storing high-value data, 55 percent of respondents said they are “unsure” or “not confident at all” that their organization’s files are being backed up.

In addition, according to the survey, three of the four most common file types in organizations’ data centers are office productivity documents, images and rich media – or unstructured data sets, the kind of data most commonly considered to be high-value data and that is contributing to most of the data growth in today’s data centers.

“Data breaches in the news demonstrate the devastating effects of failing to properly identify and secure high-value data,” said Christine Taylor, analyst at Taneja Group. “Yet it’s clear from Imation’s survey that organizations aren’t confident their high-value data is protected. It’s not for lack of trying – companies do their best to safeguard critical information. But in our increasingly digital and mobile age, critical data is too often lost, corrupted or comprised. Businesses need the right tools right now, before they experience potentially catastrophic loss.”

One critical step in protecting high-value data is identifying it properly in the first place. Imation Secure Data Discovery is interactive software that helps IT administrators do just that by assessing the value of their file data based on the ages and types of files they have. Secure Data Discovery quickly provides a report, analyzing how many of the organization’s files are considered high-value data, how much disk space those files use and how much primary storage capacity can be saved by offloading less frequently accessed high-value data to secure archive solution for long term protection.

“These results reinforce that there’s a tremendous need in the marketplace for data storage solutions that can simplify the identification, classification and ongoing management of increasing amounts of high-value data,” said Abhik Mitra, senior solutions marketing manager for Imation’s Nexsan™ solutions. “We’ve also seen that there are tremendous cost savings that can be realized from distinguishing an organization’s most valuable data from the rest and storing and protecting all of the data on the appropriate storage solutions. It’s our mission to make this process as simple and efficient as possible, so organizations can be confident their most critical data is secure and spend more of their limited resources on other pressing business matters.”

With an understanding of their high-value data, organizations can then employ Imation’s recently announced Secure Data Movement Architecture™ (SDMA™) to actively manage their high-value data files and protect them from tampering, destruction, loss or leakage through their entire lifecycle. Imation’s Nexsan Assureon™ secure archive solutions and IronKey™ secure storage solutions are two SDMA solution components that are available and in use today. The Nexsan Assureon family of solutions provides high levels of security and integrity for archive data and can drive optimal organizational efficiency that reduces operational data management costs. Meanwhile, IronKey mobile storage solutions enable users to securely access their workspaces and files remotely while adhering to corporate IT standards.
