Seventh-Annual ‘Symetra Week of Service’ Begins Today, June 8

450 Symetra employees will volunteer at 33 nonprofits—24 in Puget Sound region

BELLEVUE, Wash.--()--This week, June 8–12, more than 450 Symetra employees will roll up their sleeves and tackle volunteer projects throughout the Puget Sound region and across the country for the seventh-annual Symetra Week of Service. Employees will take time from their work day to volunteer on behalf of 33 nonprofit organizations — 24 in the Greater Seattle area. Symetra employee volunteers have contributed nearly 8,200 Week of Service hours since the program’s inception in 2009.

While we’re engaged in supporting nonprofits year ‘round, the Symetra Week of Service spotlights our employees’ involvement in and commitment to the communities in which we live and work,” said Symetra CEO Tom Marra, who will be among the employee volunteers. “This annual tradition gives us a chance to connect with our colleagues, join forces to help our nonprofit partners who do so much good and make a positive impact in our communities through hands-on service.”

Here are the 2015 Symetra Week of Service nonprofit partners and activities in the Puget Sound area:

American Heart Association of Puget Sound

Volunteers will assemble craft kits and make handmade cards and finger puppets for kids undergoing cardiac treatment at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

American Red Cross Serving King & Kitsap Counties

Volunteers will assist with blood drives, tackle landscaping and clean cots and vehicles.

Atlantic Street Center

Volunteers will help organize and label items for Atlantic Street Center’s Summer Academy.

Attain Housing

Volunteers will help with yard work and cleaning garden areas around housing units.

Auburn Youth Resources

Volunteers will clean, paint trim and do light yard work.

Bellevue Family YMCA

Volunteers will help paint a mural and build a perimeter fence.

Bellevue LifeSpring

Volunteers will organize and pack snack-time and mealtime food boxes for children.

Camp Korey

Volunteers will garden, paint, repair fences and clean lodges.

City of Kirkland

Volunteers will dig a diversion trench at Watershed Park and clean the kitchen at Peter Kirk Community Center.

City of Renton

Volunteers will weed and spread bark at the North Highlands Neighborhood Center and Meadow Crest Playground.

Forterra

Volunteers will remove blackberry bushes and other invasive plants and sheet mulch along the Green River Trail.

Green Kirkland Partnership

Volunteers will help with cleanup and maintenance at Cotton Hill Park and Juanita Bay Park.

Green Plate Special

Volunteers will weed, compost, organize a tool shed and clean a chicken coop.

Hopelink

Volunteers will assist with a deep clean of the Shoreline location.

Imagine Children's Museum

Volunteers will help clean and paint the interior of the Everett museum.

Kindering

Volunteers will prepare materials for projects used in classrooms or for motor therapy at the Bellevue location.

Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center

Volunteers will landscape, paint, and wash and repair fencing at the Redmond facility.

Northwest Harvest

Volunteers will sort and re-package bulk food at the Kent location for distribution to food banks and schools throughout Washington.

Ronald McDonald House of Western Washington & Alaska

Volunteers will clean, organize and do yardwork at this facility for families with children being treated at Seattle Children's Hospital.

Seattle Children’s Hospital

Volunteers will lead playroom arts and crafts projects for patients.

Seattle Humane Society

Volunteers will spread bark on the dogs' walking trails at the Bellevue facility.

Sophia Way

Volunteers will clean, organize and sort donations at the Bellevue women’s shelter.

Summit Assistance Dogs

Volunteers will help train and groom adult dogs and puppies.

Westside Baby

Volunteers will sort clothing donations, package diapers and check for toy recalls at the Seattle location.

Outside of the Puget Sound area, Symetra employees in Ashland, Wisconsin; Enfield, Connecticut; Waltham, Massachusetts; and West Des Moines, Iowa will participate in volunteer activities on behalf of 9 nonprofits:

  • Ashland—Ashland Parks and Recreation, The Brick Ministries and Vaughn Public Library
  • Enfield—Enfield Food Shelf, Elizabeth Park Conservancy, The Grey House and My Sister’s Place
  • Waltham—Waltham Boys & Girls Club
  • West Des Moines—Mercy Hospital
