AMELIA, Ohio--()--American Modern Insurance Group ®, a leading speciality insurer, has launched an initiative to educate consumers on how they can live smarter, safer and more sustainably. As part of this project, named LivingWise, American Modern’s employees will build a two-story home that demonstrates these features inside its nearly 50,000 square foot claims training facility in Amelia, OH.

Throughout the construction process and beyond, American Modern will share educational resources, including videos, through a blog dedicated to providing tips and information on how to apply the LivingWise principles.

“One of our goals with LivingWise is to empower people with practical knowledge about home energy conservation, environmentally friendly building materials and how to make homes more resilient to severe weather,” said American Modern President and CEO Manny Rios. “The initiative also serves to enhance our hands-on training programs that engage and educate our employees to better serve our customers.”

LivingWise Home Construction

More than 300 American Modern employees will work in groups to construct the LivingWise home. Once completed, it will be used as part of the company’s ongoing claims training curriculum.

The home is being built in partnership with Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB), which is contributing and installing smart home technologies as part of the LivingWise project. American Modern and HSB are both subsidiaries of Munich Re, one of the world’s largest reinsurers, and members of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), also a partner in the LivingWise initiative. IBHS is a research and communications association solely supported by the property insurance industry that focuses on translating its building science research into real world resilience.

With support from these partners, the LivingWise home will be:

  • Smart: The home will feature smart technologies in homebuilding provided by HSB, including: a smart thermostat, keyless entry doorway, water sensors and carbon dioxide/smoke detectors.
  • Sustainable: Home building materials will be made of sustainable and environmentally-friendly elements, including bamboo and cork flooring as well as concrete countertops.
  • Secure: With guidance from IBHS, the roof of the home and the garage are being built to meet FORTIFIED standards to make the home more resistant to high winds and hail.
