DMTF Announces Adoption of Cloud Management Standard by ISO and IEC

International validation expected to accelerate adoption of Infrastructure as a Service cloud management standard

PORTLAND, Ore.--()--Distributed Management Task Force, Inc. (DMTF) today announced that the organization’s Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface (CIMI) standard has been adopted and published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as ISO/IEC 19831:2015. CIMI’s publication by ISO/IEC as an International standard for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) management is expected to accelerate worldwide adoption and interoperability, and is the latest DMTF standard to achieve this designation.

DMTF’s CIMI standard describes the model and protocol for management interactions between a cloud IaaS Provider and the Consumers of an IaaS service, helping facilitate portability between cloud implementations that support the standard.

“ISO and IEC accreditation provide additional credibility and availability of DMTF standards to an international audience, further enabling effective management of IT environments worldwide,” said Jeff Hilland, president, DMTF. “CIMI is an important addition – governments and customers now have an IaaS cloud management standard to point to in requirements documentation and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).”

CIMI addresses the management of the lifecycle of infrastructure provided by an IaaS Provider. The standard specifies a Representational State Transfer (REST)-style protocol using HTTP and the basic resources of IaaS – machines, storage, and networks – are modeled. The model is not specific to HTTP, and it is possible to map CIMI to other protocols to meet user needs.
