Books-A-Million Announces Winners of High School Publishing Contest

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be awarded Books-A-Million gift cards for their respective schools, and their books will be published with BAM! Publishing

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--()--The winner of Books-A-Million’s first annual Publishing Contest is Adriane Tharp from the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Tharp’s work, “Cross/Roads and (Re)Mappings” was the unanimous winner and will be published through BAM! Publishing’s Masterpiece publishing package.

The Alabama School of Fine Arts will receive $3,000 in Books-A-Million gift cards which can be used to stock and supply the school’s library and classrooms.

“I’m thankful that this competition gives student artists a voice—I feel like young artists are so easily ignored because of their age,” said Tharp. “One thing I’ve learned in my last four years at the Alabama School of Fine Arts is that young people have quite a lot to say if others are willing to listen.”

As part of the Masterpiece Publishing package, “Cross/Roads and (Re)Mappings” will be available for sale at the Books-A-Million in Brookwood Village through their Espresso Book Machine® and online at Booksamillion.com. All royalties from book sales will go to the school.

“Congratulations to Adriane! This is well-deserved recognition for her work,” said Joyce McKinnon, Espresso Book Machine® Coordinator with Books-A-Million. “It is a powerful, haunting and beautiful book. We are thrilled to award the school the Books-A-Million gift cards and publish this book from Adriane.”

Both second and third place winners were from Mountain Brook High School. “Eliza” from Jennifer Lauriello won second place and $1,500 in Books-A-Million gift cards for Mountain Brook High School.

Third place was awarded to the Mountain Brook High School Literary Staff for “The Muse.” They are awarded $500 in Books-A-Million gift cards.

“The second and third place books were immensely enjoyable to read,” said McKinnon. “There is definitely some real literary talent at Mountain Brook High School.”

The second and third place winning books will also be published with BAM! Publishing’s Masterpiece publishing package. They will be available for sale at Booksamillion.com and at the Brookwood Village Books-A-Million as well.
