Pica8 CEO Says SDN Use Cases Growing With Layer-2 / Layer-3 and SDN Integration

PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--At a panel discussion entitled “Cutting Through the Hype: Get the Real Story with SDN,” held in San Jose, CA yesterday, Pica8 President and CEO James Liao said that the key to developing solid SDN use cases was to enable SDN applications on the same switches as Layer-2/Layer-3 networking.

Liao spoke on a panel moderated by Peter Christy, research director of 451 Research. The panel also included executives from Big Switch Networks, Cisco and Midokura, and discussed such topics as the state of SDN, use cases for SDN, SDN adoption leaders, and how to evaluate current SDN solutions.

“We are seeing solid use cases for SDN among enterprises and service providers who are converging SDN applications with Layer-2/Layer-3 networking,” said Liao. “We believe that network architects and managers will continue to use a CLI for managing Layer-2/Layer-3 functions, and add SDN applications in the cases where they bring unique value to the network.”
