Cumulus Networks Extends Power of Linux Across Entire Rack With New Cumulus Rack Management Platform Product

New OS Extends Power of Linux to Out-of-Band Management Switches, Gives Customers One Common Interface and Operational Model for Data Center Networking

Interop Las Vegas 2015

LAS VEGAS--()--Interop Las Vegas 2015 – Cumulus Networks®, provider of the Cumulus® Linux® operating system for open networking, today announced the new Cumulus Rack Management Platform (RMP™) OS for out-of-band management switches. Developed in response to demand from major customers, this new OS extends open networking to the full rack and allows customers to manage their networks with one common interface and operational model.

“Due to customer demand for choice and affordable capacity in the data center, open networking is now inevitable. Hundreds of our customers, from the largest cloud providers to small organizations across the public and private sectors, have experienced the ease, efficiency and agility that comes from running a true Linux OS on data center switches, and they are eager for more,” said Reza Malekzadeh, VP of Business, Cumulus Networks. “Cumulus RMP extends those benefits to the last mile within the rack – management switches.”

Cumulus RMP will be available through providers of open rack management switches. Penguin Computing provides the first platform supporting the Cumulus RMP operating system, the Penguin Computing Arctica 4804ip, available from Penguin Computing and its channel partners. The Arctica 4804ip includes the license for Cumulus RMP, a three-year warranty and three years of customer support.

“Penguin Computing focuses squarely on using open technology to help customers build solutions that take their computing to the next level, whether it’s on the compute or networking side,” said Phil Pokorny, Chief Technology Officer, Penguin Computing. “This new product lets us offer customers the same Linux OS across the entire rack.”

Cumulus RMP is based on the mature Cumulus Linux code base and is designed specifically for specialized out-of-band switches. Because this is a true Linux distribution, switches running Cumulus RMP may be managed by the same Linux toolsets as those used on servers and on switches running Cumulus Linux.

Also today, Cumulus Networks announced that Supermicro has joined the company’s Open Hardware program with immediate support for Cumulus Linux on Supermicro bare metal switches. Cumulus RMP and the Supermicro portfolio will accelerate the adoption of open networking by providing customers with expanded choices, affordable capacity, and shared Linux management across servers and switches. For detailed information about supported platforms please see the Cumulus Networks hardware compatibility list which now includes 25 Cumulus Linux Ready switches from seven partners: Agema, Dell, Edge-Core, HP, Penguin, Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT), and Supermicro.
