BRUSSELS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Four Joint Undertakings (JU) demonstrated their capability to create European added-value by engaging the about 400 participants at the ECSEL Consortium Building Event on 14/15 April 2015 in Brussels in intensive exchanges to explore synergies.
Presentation from the JUs “Clean Sky 2”, “Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2” and “Innovative Medicine Initiatives 2” highlighted their objectives and set the stage for interacting with the JU on “Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership” (ECSEL) whose stakeholders present at the event provide advanced solutions of this key enabling technology that permeates all industries and aspects of societal life.
The JUs support collaborative research and innovation actions with a combined value of 14 billion euro public and private contributions. Public contributions are provided by the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme of the European Union, and in the case of ECSEL JU also by National Funding Authorities. The JUs implement Part II, “Industrial leadership”, of Horizon 2020, with a combined budget 60% higher than under the previous EU Framework Programme Seven.
The interactive session also benefitted from the active participation of the Directorate General for Agriculture of the European Commission addressing precision farming, the association of automotive R&D organisations (EARPA), and the French association of the printed electronics industry (AFELIM). It was followed by a networking activity resulting in more than 30 concrete exploratory contacts. Follow up actions will concentrate both on generating cross-cutting project ideas, and scrutinizing rules and procedure to remove roadblocks and facilitate coordinated actions among different instruments when the objectives are synergistic.

The “Electronic Components and Systems for
European Leadership” (ECSEL) is a Joint Undertaking established by the
Council Regulation (EU) No 561/2014 that entered into power on 27 June
2014. The ECSEL JU receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon
2020 research and innovation programme. It is a public-private
partnership engaging, in the period 2014-2020, up to 1.17 billion euro
European Union funding, combining it with a commensurate amount of
national/regional funding to leverage about 5 billion euro Research and
Innovation investments in nanoelectronics, embedded and cyber-physical
systems, and system integration technologies. The R&D actors are
represented by the associations AENEAS, ARTEMISIA and EPoSS.
