PHILADELPHIA--()--The Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions at Gwynedd Mercy University announced today the launch of its Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, which will be offered at a new state-of-the-art facility being reconstructed at the University’s Center City location at Sixth and Chestnut streets.

Designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field, the ABSN aims to produce future nursing leaders, and features the high-quality education and clinical rotation opportunities which have long been hallmarks of the school’s nursing programs. The degree program takes as little as 15 months to complete, and is conveniently located in Center City so that candidates from across the Greater Philadelphia area can take advantage of the ABSN. Enrollment is currently open, with the first cohort of students set to start in May.

The investment in the Center City campus renovation includes a brand new clinical lab, high-fidelity simulation lab, and classroom and office space to accommodate students and the hiring of dedicated faculty.

The launch of the ABSN comes just months after the school admitted its first class of students into a new, four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program offered on the university’s main campus in Gwynedd Valley in August 2014. Both programs are being implemented to keep up with the latest healthcare trends, including market demand for bachelors-prepared nurses and the growing need for nurses nationwide. The U.S. Bureau of Labor forecasts a shortage of more than 580,000 registered nurses by 2018.

“Gwynedd Mercy University has invested in developing and advocating for these bachelor-level programs to meet the clear and immediate demand for more, and better educated, nurses,” said Dr. Andrea Hollingsworth, Dean of the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions at Gwynedd Mercy University. "Leveraging our rigorous curriculum, dedicated faculty and new state-of-the-art facility, our programs position students young and old for successful, long-term careers as the profession continues to evolve.”

The ABSN program consists of 69 credits, with topics that range from pharmacology and statistical analytics to global health and health policy. Students will gain theoretical knowledge, clinical experience, research skills, management skills, and a foundation for practitioner ethics and moral responsibility. They will also benefit from the school’s highly qualified instructors and network of more than 200 health organization affiliations.

For more than 50 years, the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions at Gwynedd Mercy University has been a leader in superior nursing education. Named after Class of 1955 alumna Frances M. Maguire, the school has been the recipient of generous donations from The Maguire Foundation, which has a mission to support educational opportunities that build a strong foundation for success.

“The Maguire Foundation is proud to play a critical role in advancing the mission of the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions at Gwynedd Mercy University as it expands its footprint in the Greater Philadelphia region and its impact on the healthcare field,” Maguire said. “The changes slated for the months ahead will better enable students to provide superior care and service to the community in the future.”
