Research and Markets: Cellular MEMS & Sensor Markets 2014-2018

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/6tgjvw/cellular_mems_and) has announced the addition of the "Cellular MEMS & Sensor Markets '14" report to their offering.

This report provides a detailed market analysis of MEMS and sensors for cellphones and tablets. Devices covered include MEMS of several types, sensors of several types, camera/image sensors and touch-screen controllers (see below). Market shares for all vendors for each product type are included and 2014 market prospects for key vendors are discussed.

MEMS and sensors now constitute 23.4% of the cellular handset and tablet market, second only to digital baseband's 28% of the $65 billion (non-memory) cellphone chip market. The sensor category includes touch controllers, camera image sensors and numerous Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors. The MEMS and sensor component sales portion grew by 36% to $5 billion in 2013 and we forecast the MEMS & sensors to grow another 20% to $6 billion in 2014.

The highest growth is biometric image sensor recognition, which grew 221% to 45 million units in 2013 and will grow to 145 million in 2014.

Two suppliers are now offering 9-axis devices supporting the integration of 3-axis gyro, accelerometer and magnetometer. However, the adoption rate is very slow, while the 6-Axis gyro and accelerometer market grows more rapidly, displacing the standalone accelerometer.

High-SNR MEMS microphones, used in best-selling devices like Apple's iPhone, face a bright future as the market keeps climbing. Slowly, they are replacing the larger low-SNR ECM microphones in non-smartphones as well as their multiple use in background noise reduction. Global revenues for MEMS microphones are forecast to reach $1.09 billion in 2014, up 15% from 2013.

The camera image sensors (both secondary and primary) represent 11% of components and grew by 27% to $7 Billion in 2013. The stacked image sensor approach is now being supported by two of the major suppliers. Other majors are moving their pixel process from 90µm to 65µm with some loss in light sensitivity. Higher density, faster image capture and auto focused image processing are major drivers.

The projected touch capacitance controller market at $3.45 billion grew 20% in 2013 compared to 19% in 2012. The lower growth was due to a significant drop in price from the influx of new suppliers. The market clearly shows signs of shifting towards an integrated display driver and touch controller, which could have a significant impact on suppliers in 2014.
