ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Truven Health AnalyticsTM today released its annual study identifying the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance.
The study found that the 100 Top Hospitals® have roughly a half-day shorter patient length of stay, 4 percent fewer complications, and 5.9 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rates. The winners also performed better than peer-group hospitals on 30-day readmissions for heart failure, heart attack and other conditions. On a regional basis, 14 of this year’s 100 Top Hospitals were based in California, more than from any other state. Ohio and Illinois had the second-largest number of hospitals on the list, with 10 each.
Based on the results of this year’s study, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:
- Nearly 126,500 additional lives could be saved
- $1.8 billion in inpatient costs could be saved
- Nearly 109,000 additional patients could be complication-free
- The average patient stay would decrease by half a day
- Episode of illness expense would be 2 percent lower than the peer average
If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.

The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® is the most comprehensive, rigorous study of its kind, incorporating public data; proprietary, risk-adjusted and peer-reviewed methodologies; and key performance metrics to arrive at an objective balanced scorecard measuring current performance and long-term improvement. It evaluates performance in 11 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, pneumonia; and new for this year, Medicare Spend per Beneficiary (Medicare Spend). The addition of Medicare Spend leverages CMS data to evaluate the cost incurred for an episode of care across settings pre- and post-discharge for Medicare patients. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.
For the seventh year, Truven Health Analytics is also recognizing the 100 Top Hospitals Everest Award winners — those hospitals among the 100 winners that delivered the greatest rate of improvement over five years. This year, there are 17 Everest Award winners.

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 3,000 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
For 22 years, the 100 Top Hospitals program has collaborated with top academics to uncover the impact organizational leadership has on the performance and best practices within the nation’s top healthcare organizations. The quantitative study is also unique in that it evaluates hospitals on measures of overall organizational performance combined with long-term rates of improvement. The measures are equally weighted and hospitals are only compared against similar facilities in terms of size and teaching status. The study criteria and methodologies have set the standard for objective quality evaluation of acute care hospitals, as illustrated by its selection by the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology to validate performance of Baldridge Award winners.
