CHSi Awarded U.S. National Park Service Contract

— Medical Services Company to Provide Comprehensive Medical Exams —

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. & RESTON, Va.--()--Comprehensive Health Services, Incorporated (CHSi) was recently awarded a five-year contract following a rebid by the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) to conduct comprehensive medical exams, including fitness-for-duty and independent medical evaluations, in all 50 states and U.S. territories. CHSi held the contract for the previous five-year term, with the expiring award issued on July 20, 2009. Pre-placement and incumbent medical exams will be provided for NPS staff involved in “arduous duty” occupations, including law enforcement, scuba divers and structural firefighters.

“With a large portion of National Park Service staff having job duties that require rigorous physical exercise, ensuring they are prepared to fulfill their jobs duties while being healthy and safe in what are often challenging environments is extremely important,” said CHSi President Gary G. Palmer. “CHSi is honored to have been selected to provide these necessary medical services to NPS, which is entrusted with preserving many of our nation’s most important natural resources.”

The NPS footprint spans more than 84 million acres across every state in the nation.

As stated in the contract, the objective of the program is to determine if NPS staff or an NPS job applicant who perform arduous duties have “any medical condition(s) that would prevent them from performing, with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential functions of the position without posing significant risk to themselves or others. It must be determined if the examinee’s health status, or if applicable, medical condition(s), will be aggravated and/or worsened by the physical demands and/or working conditions of the job or work conditions.”

Under the program, the NPS applies the medical qualifications to all positions in which arduous duties are assigned, whether as a primary or collateral duty, and whether the position is career, term or temporary. Law enforcement officers who perform collateral duty as wildland firefighters are included in the program as part of the contract scope.

The contract is managed by the Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services Division (LESES) under the Visitor and Resource Protection Associateship (VRP) at NPS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

CHSi has worked with the NPS in various capacities since 2003.
