U.S.VETS Expanding Mental Health Services in Orange County

LOS ANGELES--()--U.S.VETS, the country’s largest nonprofit devoted to homeless and at-risk veterans, has recently received the funding to expand an innovative mental health program for veterans in Orange County.

The gift of over $300,000 from the Unihealth Foundation, as well as $75,000 from an anonymous donor, will fund U.S.VETS’ Outside the Wire (OTW) program in Orange County for two years.

“Outside the Wire changes lives,” said Stephen Peck, president and CEO of U.S.VETS. “We are grateful that Unihealth and our other very generous donor have helped us achieve our mission of lending a hand to every veteran in need.”

Outside the Wire provides care for veterans suffering from service-related psychological injuries, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and major depression resulting from their experiences in war. The program offers individual, group, and family counseling, with a focus on recently-returned veterans who are attending college. Outside the Wire also provides combat-related mental health training to Ph.D. candidates, under the supervision of Clinical Psychologists, expanding the network of professionals trained to work with veterans.

U.S.VETS currently offers Outside the Wire services at 11 college campuses in Southern California, including Cypress and Irvine Valley Colleges in Orange County, and the program is also available at the One-Stop Veteran Service Center at Patriotic Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

With this new funding, Outside the Wire will expand to four additional Orange County schools: Orange Coast College, Fullerton College, Coastline Community College and Santa Ana College. The program expansion will provide greater access to timely and effective services for veterans and their families in southern California.
