Westinghouse Significantly Expands Fuel Supply in Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine--()--Westinghouse Electric Company and the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NNEGC Energoatom) today agreed to significantly increase fuel deliveries to Ukrainian nuclear power plants through 2020. This increased cooperation between Westinghouse and Energoatom will bring diversification and security of nuclear fuel supplies for Ukraine’s reactor fleet.

U.S.-based Westinghouse has been working in the Ukrainian market since 2003, and brings diversification of suppliers, global best practices and technology to the Ukraine market. Westinghouse fuel is currently operating safely and efficiently at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant without any defects in performance. Under terms of the contract, Westinghouse will employ its global diverse supply chain to manufacture the fuel and components making use of its facilities in the U.S. and Europe.

“This most recent agreement with Energoatom provides for the continuation of the long-standing partnership between our two companies in providing competitive and secure nuclear fuel supplies for Ukraine’s reactor fleet. We expect that with continued superior results and competitive efficiency of our fuel design, Westinghouse will continue to grow its share of the Ukrainian nuclear fuel market," said Yves Brachet, Westinghouse president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Westinghouse looks forward to providing a full range of products and services to Ukraine and the global VVER market with proven experience in digital controls, fuel, refueling, inspection services and plant upgrades and refurbishments.”

Westinghouse is a single-source global nuclear fuel provider for pressurized water reactors (PWRs), including Russian-designed VVER reactors, as well as boiling water reactors (BWRs) and advanced gas-cooled reactors (AGRs). Westinghouse today provides nuclear fuel to 145 plants globally, 65 of which are in Europe, and has 10 nuclear fuel manufacturing locations around the world, including two sites in Europe: Springfields Fuels Limited in Preston, Lancashire, U.K. and Westinghouse Electric Sweden in Västerås.
