FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Worldwide PC monitor shipments totaled 33.4 million units in the third quarter of 2014 (3Q14), a year-over-year decline of -5.1%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker. IDC expects worldwide shipments to remain flat with 33.5 million units forecast to ship in the last quarter of 2014.
"We found modest year-over-year shipment growth for 3Q14 in Western Europe and the U.S. – 4.4% and 4.5%, respectively – two of the largest regions for PC monitor unit shipments. IDC expects shipments in the U.S. to have another quarter of single-digit growth in the fourth quarter of 2014," said Phuong Hang, Program Director, Worldwide PC Monitor Tracker at IDC.
Technology Highlights
- Monitors with a 16:9 aspect ratio dominated the market with 83.8% share, followed by 16:10 monitors.
- Shipments of touch screen monitors continued to see double-digit growth across all eight regional markets in 3Q14. Western Europe was the largest market in terms of touch screen units shipped, followed by the U.S. and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan).
Vendor Highlights
- Dell continued to lead the market in 3Q14 with worldwide share of 15.2% on shipments of more than 5.0 million units and 4.8% year-over-year growth.
- Samsung remained the number 2 vendor in terms of total units shipped and maintained its #1 position in terms of total revenue.
- HP strengthened its top 3 spot by growing 4.0% year over year to nearly 4.0 million units shipped and 11.8% share. The vendor's growth was boosted by solid year-over-year shipment growth in six out of eight regional markets.
- Lenovo saw its shipments decline -1.5% year over year, resulting in 9.6% market share. However, Lenovo saw its third consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in Western Europe, which is Lenovo's third biggest region in terms of unit shipments.
- LG rounded out the top 5 with 3.1 million units shipped and 9.4% share. The vendor was ranked #1 in Latin America and Canada in terms of unit shipments in the third quarter of 2014.
