Netmag Joins Pica8, Inc.’s Expanding Hardware Ecosystem

Driving a burgeoning supply chain delivering customers both hardware choice and a means to transition to software-defined networking with one operating system

PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--Pica8®, Inc., the leader in open systems for software-defined networking (SDN), today announced that Netmag has joined Pica8’s Hardware Ecosystem. The ecosystem provides a path for all qualified ecosystem partners to resell Pica8’s SDN ready network operating system -- PicOS™. Netmag offers a full portfolio of 1GbE, 10GbE, and 40GbE switches.

“Our belief is that the market is at a fundamental turning point,” said James Huang, General Manager, Netmag. “We are a strong believer in a healthy supply of multiple hardware suppliers – it is part of how we see the networking market evolving. We are proud to be part of the Pica8 Hardware Ecosystem. Customers now have the opportunity to consider Netmag switches as part the emerging open networking model.”

PicOS is the first bare metal compatible network operating system that enables customers to seamlessly and easily migrate from conventional networking to SDN. PicOS delivers SDN solutions through Pica8’s adoption of Open-vSwitch (OVS). Pica8’s switching and routing support is key for easy integration and adoption into existing network topologies, while OVS provides the SDN functionality and northbound interface that DevOps users expect. PicOS offers a comprehensive and flexible configuration management environment from either a Linux shell or feature-rich command line interface (CLI). Further, PicOS runs as an application on an unmodified Linux kernel, thereby natively leveraging network automation tools (such as Chef or Puppet) that are popular with server and system administrators.

“Like Pica8, Netmag believes in an open networking model, so they are an ideal hardware partner for us,” said Steve Garrison, Vice President of Marketing, Pica8. “The time is now for adopting the same supply chain model as we see widely accepted by the server industry today, and Netmag offers another source of open networking switches bundled with PicOS. We’re excited to partner with Netmag to expand the idea of open networking, and to extend their best-of-breed offerings that will accelerate the deployment of open systems.”
