Adoptions Together Celebrates National Adoption Awareness Month

-- 100,000 Children in U.S. Foster Care Need Help Finding Forever Families --

WASHINGTON--()--Adoptions Together, who next year will celebrate 25 years of building and strengthening families formed through adoption, guardianship, foster care, and kinship, is pleased to recognize and celebrate National Adoption Awareness Month.

This special month highlights the more than 100,000 children in foster care in the United States – more than 2,000 of these children who are waiting for adoption reside in care throughout the Washington, DC, and Baltimore metropolitan areas. On National Adoption Day, Saturday, November 22, in courtrooms around the country, approximately 4,500 adoptions from foster care will be finalized.

In the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia courtrooms it is expected that approximately 200 adoptions will take place. Sadly, every year 30,000 teens turn 18 without permanent families. Adoptions Together works tirelessly to find permanent and healthy homes for children of all ages.

We salute President Barack Obama’s Presidential Proclamation made on October 31, 2014, For a full copy of the President’s proclamation, visit http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/10/31/presidential-proclamation-national-adoption-month-2014.

“This month, and in our day to day efforts, Adoptions Together dedicates our work to the children we know will benefit from growing and flourishing in a permanent, healthy family environment. National Adoption Awareness Month shines a light on crucial needs that exist for all children in foster care and in need of adoption so that they have the right to reach their full potential in a lifelong and loving family,” said Janice Goldwater, Adoptions Together’s executive director and founder.

Deb and Marcus Gregoire of Bristow, VA, adopted their two older daughters from foster care with the help of Adoptions Together's older child placement program in 2008. The Gregoires returned again in 2012, when they were placed with a 5 month old baby from Adoptions Together’s infant program. They now have three beautiful daughters of whom they are so very proud.

“I think of our family like a patchwork quilt. Not all of the pieces are cut from the same cloth, but it has been put together with thought and love and it is a truly beautiful thing. We are so grateful to the staff at Adoptions Together or helping us build our forever family,” commented the Gregoires on the eve of National Adoption Day 2014.

Since 1990, Adoptions Together, with locations in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC, has placed more than 4,000 children. Each year, Adoptions Together helps more than 150 children join nurturing, stable families and the support continues to every family for a lifetime of guidance, education, and counseling to ensure that each family stays strong together.
