Now Anyone Can Bake!; Drop Debuts Connected Kitchen Scale and Recipe App in Time for the Holidays

Now available for purchase and download, Drop announces retail partnerships, including Apple, and featured recipe content

SAN FRANCISCO--()--1DropTM today debuted a new interactive recipe app and connected kitchen scale making it possible for anyone to bake with ease, regardless of experience. In addition to opening the Drop store online, the company also announced it has secured retail relationships, just in time for the holiday shopping season. Drop will be available in Apple stores across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., and online at Apple.com, Brit + Co, Food52, and Harvey Norman stores in Ireland.

“Drop does an amazing job of bringing technology to the kitchen and updating the baking experience to make anyone an expert,” said Brit Morin, founder and CEO, Brit + Co. “I’m so impressed with the entire experience: from real-time adjustments to recipes available in the app and tips from Drop’s baking experts. It really is a must-have in the kitchen.”

Drop’s interactive recipe app, Drop Kitchen, is available for free from the App Store, and includes beautifully photographed sweet and savory recipes from the company’s test kitchens in San Francisco and Dublin, Ireland. Delights include Mini Pumpkin Pies, Honey Sea Salt Caramels and Spiced Mushroom Pastry Parcels. Also announced today: special featured content from Good Housekeeping Cookbooks’ new release: Good Housekeeping The Baker's Book of Essential Recipes, Food52, and well-known baking bloggers, with mouth-watering recipes like Brown Sugar Swirl Cake from CakeSpy.

“We’re making Drop’s vision—to bring people together around home-cooked food—a reality, by reinventing recipes and enriching them with the latest 'Internet of Things' technology and thinking,” said Ben Harris, co-founder and CEO, Drop. “We want everyone to experience the joy of creating something from scratch, without having to go to cooking school or calling a more experienced baking friend. Drop gives you all that, and way more,” said Harris.

How it Works

Drop’s research shows that inconsistent results when baking at home are often caused by inaccurately measuring quantities. Using measuring cups, or baking by volume instead of weight, can often create as much as a 20% differential based on how fast you scoop an ingredient, air temperature, moisture, and so on. By connecting interactive recipes directly to its scale, Drop aims to eliminate this margin for error, and step wannabe bakers through every element, including offering handy photo and video tips along the way. Re-scaling of quantities and substitution of common ingredients, happen at the tap of the screen, and reduced cleanup, thanks to numerous one-bowl recipes, all add to the fun of baking with Drop.

The Perfect Holiday Gift

Available to buy from today, Drop will make the perfect holiday gift for any budding baker and experienced cooks will want to get their hands on Drop too. Recipes vary from easy to difficult, with more challenging endeavors, like Chocolate Rosemary Tarts, benefiting from pro tips offered along the way. Drop also works like a regular kitchen scale too. For anyone wishing to bake from their favorite cookbook, it’s simple—just use the precise Drop scale, and place your iPad wherever is most convenient and comfortable—e.g. at eye-level—to read the display.

The First Product To Ship From Highway1 Incubator

Drop is the first product to ship from the PCH hardware accelerator, Highway1. Highway1 helps entrepreneurs take their product ideas from concept through to prototype, and gets them ready for manufacturing. A member of the first graduating class in February 2014, which included 13 companies, Drop joined the PCH Access program to scale its product after leaving Highway1.

“Drop has captured the consumer imagination, with strong pre-sales. It’s phenomenal that less than one year ago they were in Highway1 and today they are getting ready to ship for the holidays,” said PCH Founder and CEO Liam Casey. “The four co-founders are phenomenal entrepreneurs and we’re proud to be part of their team. Their laser-focus on product design, product brand and the consumer experience, is certainly paying off.”

Drop is currently available in the U.S. and Europe, priced at $99.95 in the U.S., $109.95 in Canada, £79.95 in the U.K. and €99.95 across Europe. The Drop Kitchen recipe app is free.
