DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Chamberlain College of Nursing is opening a new campus in Las Vegas and is now accepting applications for admission to the spring semester, which begins Jan. 5, 2015. The Las Vegas campus is Chamberlain’s first in Nevada and 15th in the nation.

The opening of the new Chamberlain College of Nursing campus will help meet the increasing healthcare demands of our community and offer Nevadans a great option to launch into the nursing profession. Nurses are in high demand in Nevada; the state has the nation’s fourth-lowest number of registered nurses per 100,000 people at 724.7, far lower than the national average of 920.9.1 Further accelerating a need for nurses is the state’s growing population of residents over age 65, which is projected to nearly double by 2020.2 Additionally, healthcare is Nevada’s fastest-growing industry. From 2002 to 2012, the state’s healthcare and social assistance sector led all industries in total job development, adding more than 30,000 jobs.3 Nevada healthcare employers are projected to add 13,527 jobs by 2020.4 Chamberlain’s Las Vegas campus increases access to education for prospective nurses interested in entering this booming industry.

Located in northwest Las Vegas at 9901 Covington Cross Drive, Chamberlain’s new campus offers an on-site Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program that can be completed in as few as three years of year-round study instead of the typical four years with summers off. The campus features Chamberlain’s SIMCARE CENTER™, which provides high-tech simulated patient care in clinical learning environments, and a Center for Academic Success, which delivers comprehensive academic resources and support for students. The education experience is grounded in Chamberlain Care, an approach that includes a unique student academic success model. The Las Vegas campus dean, Judith Hightower, PhD, MEd, RN, has more than 25 years of academic and clinical experience. Dr. Hightower previously served as dean of academic operations for Chamberlain’s Phoenix campus and as visiting professor in the Master of Science in Nursing degree program. Dr. Hightower’s professional accomplishments in academia include serving as the director of nursing at Fortis College, clinical assistant professor at Arizona State University and clinical adjunct professor at Grand Canyon University College of Nursing. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in nursing from University of Arizona, a Master of Science degree in community health nursing from Arizona State University and a Master of Education degree from Northern Arizona University. She also holds a graduate certificate in gerontology from the University of Arizona.
