NEW ORLEANS--()--Physicist, string theorist, and best-selling author Brian Greene will talk about the intersection of science, computing, and society as he delivers the keynote address at SC14 this November 18, 2014 in New Orleans, LA (USA). Held this year from November 16-21, SC is the premier international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis.

"High performance computing is uniquely valuable in the world today," observes Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Trish Damkroger, general chair for SC14. "As researchers and engineers push the boundaries of their professions in the pursuit of a better future for all, they are rapidly moving into areas in which physical experiments are not practical, or even possible. Supercomputers are the only instrument capable of enabling advances in these areas. In fact, as the critical enabler in research ranging from new medicines and public safety to our understanding of the universe, HPC matters today more than ever."

Described by The Washington Post as "the single best explainer of abstruse concepts in the world today," Brian Greene is one of the world's leading theoretical physicists and a brilliant, entertaining communicator of cutting-edge scientific concepts. Greene's national bestseller, The Elegant Universe, recounts the theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics. The book sold over a million copies, and became an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning NOVA special.

Greene's second book, The Fabric of the Cosmos, spent six months on The New York Times Best Sellers list and was adapted into a NOVA miniseries on PBS. Greene's latest bestseller, The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos, was published in January 2011.

Dr. Greene will officially open the conference with the keynote address on Tuesday morning, during which he will talk about the impact of science on our society and the future of physics and our understanding of the universe around us.

A Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar, Greene is a professor in Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University. His work has been published in Wired Magazine and The New York Times, and Greene has appeared as on CBS' The Big Bang Theory. He has been a guest on Charlie Rose, Nightline, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Colbert Report.
