‘ROAD TO MEMPHIS’ LEADS TO USSSA’S YOUTH BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

USSSA, AutoZone, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, Gameday Baseball partner to showcase nation’s top young players

The best teams in youth baseball are on the Road to Memphis for the AutoZone USSSA National Youth Championships Aug. 14-17 and 21-24. The United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) found strong partners to promote and bolster the championships: title sponsor AutoZone, the nation’s leading retailer and a leading distributor of automotive parts and products, and host Gameday Baseball, a first-class youth sports complex in the heart of the country.

USSSA, Executive Director and CEO, Don DeDonatis, aims to broaden the tournament’s appeal and exposure and secure its future. Twelve teams in each of six age groups (9 and under, 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U and 14U) will make it through qualifying rounds on the Road to Memphis and reach the championships. CBS Sports Network will televise the championship games for 11U thru 14U. Select games from each age group will be streamed on the USSSA Live website @ usssalive.com.

“We wanted to make sure this showcase for youth baseball continues,” said DeDonatis, whose organization is the largest multi-sport governing body in the nation, representing 3.9 million players across 12 sports. “These young players deserve the chance to compete at the highest level.” USSSA is providing $390,000 in travel money for teams on the Road to Memphis.

Headquartered in Memphis, AutoZone actively supports civic and community organizations throughout the region. “Our customers and neighbors will be attending this event – folks who put many miles on their cars traveling to participate in youth sports programs,” said Bill Edwards, Vice President, Merchandising, Customer Satisfaction. “It’s a great fit for us. We’re proud to support this family-friendly event.”

Gameday Baseball, which hosted previous national youth baseball championships, is a top-flight youth sports facility with 10 lighted fields, amenities for spectators and a main clubhouse. “Fans will see a high level of play in a great setting,” said Leigh Fox, president of Gameday Baseball.

“This event is a major national showcase for Memphis,” said Malvin Gipson, Director of the Memphis Sports Council. “In addition to the television coverage, the buzz created among the youth sports community is incredible. Memphis is becoming a preferred destination for both tournament organizers and the kids who want to play on the home field of the NYC.”

Memphis’ central location makes it a convenient site for a national tournament. Fox credits the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau for recognizing the economic impact of youth sports and helping make Memphis a major youth sports destination. “We thank USSSA for choosing Memphis and Gameday to host this prestigious event,” she said.
