One Day University Registers 40,000th Student

Boomers and retirees flock to one-off talks by Ivy League professors

NEW YORK--()--One Day University, the adult learning company that brings superstars from Harvard, Yale, Princeton and the nation’s other top colleges and universities to entertain and enlighten audiences around the country, has registered its 40,000th student.

Since launching in 2006, One Day University has grown from a single half-day event in New York City to a series of 30 full- and half-day programs in 12 cities around the country. Attendance at individual events has risen as high as 3,000 and revenues have followed suit, surpassing $3 million from a starting point of under $300,000 just eight years ago.

One Day University events are especially popular among retirees, including the growing number of retired baby boomers. Longer-lived and better educated than any generation before them – 94% have college degrees and 59% also have graduate degrees – they are eager to keep their minds active and their leisure time stocked with alternatives to the golf course, the tennis court and the performance hall.

Founder and President Steven Schragis calls what One Day University offers “edutainment,” a kind of highly accessible yet intellectually thrilling performance art that invites scholars to unleash the entertainer within and listeners to sit back, relax, and open their minds.

To find presenters, One Day University scours the country’s best schools, starting with the Ivies. He looks for professors whose lectures are standing-room-only and whose student ratings are through the roof. He then invites the speakers to present one-session, highlights-reel versions of their most oversubscribed courses to an educated, well-heeled audience eager to enjoy the benefits of college without any of the burdens.

This fall, One Day University will present more than 20 events in a dozen locations around the country – two in New York City and one each in Atlanta, Boston, Jacksonville, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, San Diego, Scottsdale, Seattle, Tampa, Washington, D.C. and Westchester.

The professor-presenters will come from the Ivy League – Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale – and from other top-tier schools, including Amherst, Bard, Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore.
