Santaluz Fundraiser Announced to Benefit San Diego Firefighters Who Helped Save the Community from Recent Wildfires

SAN DIEGO--()--When the very first San Diego wildfire, the Bernardo fire, broke out on May 6 it was headed directly into the path of Santaluz, a community of more than 800 homes just 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego.

The wildfire, pushed by Santa Ana winds, was moving east towards Santaluz. As the fire intensified and threatened Santaluz homes, a mandatory evacuation was initiated. Thanks to the valiant efforts of San Diego Station 46 firefighters, First Responders teams, along with assistance from the Santaluz security team, they were able to stop the fire from reaching any Santaluz homes or structures.

The Bernardo fire did burn up to 60 percent of the area surrounding the community, and in some spots the flames reached right up to the perimeter of many homes. Santaluz has brush management zones, which is a mandatory area around all homes where brush must be maintained, and that certainly was a safety barrier that helped protect the homes that were threatened. Additionally, to assist in the control of the fires, which were raging in the nearby canyons, Santaluz cooperated with local fire crews who used aircraft to pull water from the lakes on the Santaluz golf course.

In appreciation of the heroic effort by firefighters, Santaluz is holding a benefit to raise money for the firefighters at San Diego Station 46. The money will be used to purchase firefighting equipment and gear.

The fundraiser will be held during the annual Santaluz Summer Celebration on Saturday June 28, 2014, starting at 5pm. Station 46 firefighters and their families are invited to the event, which will include a summer barbecue, and a Fourth of July style fireworks show. The annual Santaluz Summer Celebration draws a crowd of more than 4,000 and includes activities for adults and games for children.
