IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Brings Its Vision of Augmented Reality to Augmented World Expo 2014

IEEE-SA experts to share expertise during augmented reality workshop and City Visions challenge

Augmented World Expo 2014

PISCATAWAY, N.J.--()--IEEE, the world's largest professional organization advancing technology for humanity, today announced IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) will participate in the Augmented World Expo 2014 (AWE 2014), May 27 – 29, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, Calif. IEEE-SA technical experts will share their knowledge and expertise during an augmented reality (AR) tutorial, and the organization will also take part in the “City Visions” challenge. The world’s largest augmented reality tradeshow, AWE 2014 brings together top innovators in AR, wearable computing, digital eyewear, gesture and sensors devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

“Standards will be critical to the growth of AR and the possibilities for the industry are endless. IEEE-SA is leading campaigns and projects to ensure that AR reaches its full potential,” said Mary Lynne Nielsen, technology initiatives director, IEEE-SA. “AWE 2014 provides an ideal venue for IEEE to demonstrate the role it has previously and will continue to play in the development of future cities and AR technologies.”

Ms. Nielsen will deliver a presentation on technology standards development in AR during AWE 2014’s Open and Interoperable AR tutorial to be held from 1:30pm – 5:30pm PDT on Tuesday, 27 May 2014.

IEEE-SA will also support City Visions, an open challenge for AR being held in conjunction with AWE 2014. Noted AR artist BC “Heavy” Biermann is providing a composite cityscape that enables participants to enjoy an immersive, augmented experience. IEEE-SA will offer a guided AR experience, IEEE Standards and The Future City, which invites users to stroll through the city and experience firsthand how IEEE 802TM networking standards form the underlying technological framework of the connected city, playing a role in everything from communications to global positioning. Visitors will become a “connected person,” where the individual, technology, and environment interact both in real-time and interdependently.
