Reverb Announces Swagger 2.0 Working Group, Teams up with Apigee and Others to Drive the Design-First API Specification

SAN MATEO, Calif.--()--Reverb announced today the formation of the Swagger 2.0 Working Group, in partnership with API-leader Apigee, to further the development of the popular Swagger specification and toolset for developers and API providers. Swagger has become the primary way that developers document and publish their APIs for other developers to use. With Swagger 2.0, the goal of the specification will be expanded to make it easier for developers to collaborate on API design using Swagger.

"Development today is a collaborative process, your team works together to solve problems fast," said Tony Tam, CEO of Reverb. "Collaborating with Apigee gave us the benefit of their deep experience with enterprise customers in the Fortune 2000."

Swagger lets developers describe APIs in a simple format that encourages collaboration and iteration at any stage of the development process and that enables developers to add notes on how to make use of the API directly alongside the technical details. Because the Swagger document is just a regular text file, it can be easily shared with other developers using services like GitHub.

Swagger was originally developed by Reverb to help them document their APIs, but very early on, they reached out to others in the API community for their input.

"At Apigee, we got really excited by what Tony and his team were doing, and we really wanted to get involved," said Ed Anuff, Apigee Vice President of Product Strategy. "Over the last three years, the Swagger format has earned its place as the market leader based on the strength of its framework and tooling, but it is the impressive strength of the community that will continue its momentum forward."

To make the process of collaborating on the direction of Swagger easier, the company has announced it is creating a formal working group and bringing in other members of the API community. API leader Apigee is one of the founding members.

True to the spirit of a working group, development will happen in the open community on a GitHub project. The website describing the initiative is here: http://swagger.wordnik.com and the GitHub repository is at: https://github.com/wordnik/swagger2.
