PRIUM’s Mark Pew Presents Best Practices for Opioid Use and Tapering at The New Jersey Self-Insurers’ Association 2014 Spring Conference

Conference takes place May 8-9 at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlanta City, New Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.--()--Mark Pew, senior vice president of PRIUM, a medical intervention company focused on reducing pharmacy misuse in workers’ compensation, will present “Dazed and Confused,” at The New Jersey Self-Insurers’ Association 2014 Spring Conference and Vendor Fair at Harrah’s Casino and Resort, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 9, Pew’s presentation will address best practices for opioid use and discontinuance. “While there are several pain management guidelines that address initiation and maintenance of opioid treatment, tapering guidelines are limited and inconsistent,” Pew said, citing results published in PRIUM’s new white paper “An Analysis of Drug Therapy Tapering Guidelines,” available for a free download at www.prium.com/resources/thought-leadership.

This session will take an in-depth look at the appropriate use of opioids in managing pain. It will also address the weaning process, including the three primary contributors to success: motivation of the patient and competence of the physician and the importance of acknowledging the bio-psychosocial model.

“Weaning is not just chemical detox,” Pew said. “Medical-pharmacological, psychological and physical fitness treatments work together to enable patients to truly overcome their dependence on drugs.”

The presentation is part of the 2014 NJSIA Seminar being held at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, May 8 and 9.
