Research and Markets: Global Glyphosate Market for Genetically Modified and Conventional Crops 2013 - 2019

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/wjnh3q/glyphosate_market) has announced the addition of the "Global Glyphosate Market for Genetically Modified and Conventional Crops 2013 - 2019" report to their offering.

Some of the major players producing glyphosate formulations include, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta among others. These manufacturers produce various glyphosate formulations such as aqueous solutions, soluble powder and soluble granule. These formulations are made available in the market in different grades such as glyphosate 95%, 41% IPA, 62% IPA and 50%SP among others.

Glyphosate, (N-phosphonomethyl glycine), has been extensively used by farmers as a non-selective herbicide, that controls both weeds and broadleaf grass. It is used to kill weeds that compete with field crops. The herbicide properties of glyphosate were first discovered and launched in the market by Monsanto in 1974. The consumption of glyphosate herbicides is expected to increase in the future as it is the first herbicide against which crops have been genetically modified to enhance their tolerance. With the introduction of glyphosate resistant genetically modified (GM) crops, the use of glyphosate as an herbicide has increased substantially. Significant amount of global glyphosate produced is consumed for herbicide applications in GM crops. Additionally, glyphosate is utilized in a wide range of applications including weed control in vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards, grass pastures, forestry, parks, gardens and underwater usage in rivers and lakes.

The global glyphosate market is expected to be driven by rising adoption of glyphosate tolerant GM crops and increasing demand for no tillage farming systems. However, stringent regulations, especially in Europe, and quickly evolving glyphosate resistant weeds could hamper the growth of glyphosate products. To counter above mentioned factors key players in the market are focusing on development of integrated weed management systems that contain a calculated mixture of various herbicides in the formulation to avoid dependence on one herbicide such as glyphosate. These systems ensure less or no tillage to avoid soil erosion and reduced use of agrochemical inputs, which would help farmers decrease costs and improve their margins.

Asia Pacific is the largest as well as the fastest growing market at a CAGR of 7% in terms of volume demand of glyphosate, between 2012 and 2019. Emerging countries such as China and India are leading the growth in this region. China emerged as a big exporter of low priced generic glyphosate formulations, after the expiry of Monsanto's patent over glyphosate outside the U.S. in 1991, accounting for around 30% of the global exports. Around 90% of China's glyphosate production is exported to various countries across the world. Manufacturers from China faced anti-dumping investigations in Europe and Australia for the low priced generic glyphosate formulations. Charges in Europe were dropped, while in Australia the matter remains unresolved.

Europe market accounted for 16.6% of the global glyphosate volume demand in 2012. It is projected to lose share to the emerging regions such as Asia Pacific by 2019, growing at a CAGR of 5.6%. The drop in market share is expected due to the strict stance of European regulatory bodies against the adoption of GM crops. European regulatory bodies have strict regulations on growing GM crops as their eager adoption in the U.S. lead to extensive usage of herbicides, especially glyphosate causing evolution of glyphosate resistant weeds. Conventional crops accounted for 54.8% of the total global consumption of glyphosate in 2012, in terms of volume. Glyphosate demand for GM crops is rising at a rapid rate with rising adoption of GM crops globally.
