PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Simpler Consulting, L.P., a leading global management consulting firm, would like to recognize New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) President and CEO Alan D. Aviles for more than 11 years of relentless dedication to improving the healthcare industry. Aviles, who is retiring from his position at HHC, leaves behind a legacy of true leadership and vision amidst the significant challenges of healthcare reform.
“Successful leadership in today’s complex healthcare system requires a steadfast commitment to improvement and the recognition that, to succeed as a whole, you need to inspire individually,” said Marc Hafer, CEO of Simpler Consulting and author of the Simpler Healthcare book. “Throughout his tenure at HHC, Mr. Aviles has embodied this commitment to quality and has built the foundation necessary to ensure the ongoing success of a municipal system on which millions of patients are dependent.”
Faced with soaring healthcare costs, an uncertain future for reform, declining reimbursements and a growing uninsured population, in 2007, HHC embarked on its Lean transformation journey. Throughout this process, Mr. Aviles challenged the clinicians, administration and staff at HHC to create a stronger system—one that operated efficiently but while still achieving clinical excellence. Lean organizations involve their members on the front lines to create a problem-solving culture, teaching them how to identify wasteful process steps, followed by problem solving tools to redefine care in the eyes of the patient. The results have been nothing short of incredible.
Under Mr. Aviles’ direction, HHC has emerged as an innovative hub for transformation that is focused on improving patient care and reducing costs. Since beginning its Lean transformation in 2007, the organization has achieved hundreds of millions of dollars in gross revenue and cost savings and—more importantly—has transformed the health system into one that embodies quality and innovation in care delivery.
HHC has also earned several awards for its efforts to improve patient care, including The Ernest Amory Codman Award presented by The Joint Commission, the Hospital Association of New York State Pinnacle Award for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, and the Nicholas E. Davies Award for the use of clinical information technology. Additionally, the organization’s Elmhurst Hospital Center was assigned a “Magnet” designation by the American Nurses Association to recognize quality patient care and nursing as well as innovations in professional nursing practice.
“As an early adopter of Lean management within the public hospital system, Mr. Aviles has helped HHC build an unmatched culture of innovation and quality,” said Mike Chamberlain, president of Simpler North America. “Through this work, Mr. Aviles and HHC have inspired other hospital systems to unlock the potential of Lean management to enable better, more efficient patient care. We applaud him on building this successful model for quality improvement that will leave a lasting impact well beyond his tenure.”
