ROAM, Followed by iZettle and Intuit Occupy the First Three Positions within ABI Research’s mPOS Competitive Assessment

LONDON--()--ROAM, part of the Ingenico Group was the highest ranking mPOS terminal vendor within ABI Research’s mPOS Competitive Assessment. ROAM impressed on the Innovation side, making a concerted effort to enable mPOS inclusion in all the major device types, including Android, Windows, and iOS. It also boasts a contactless mPOS device capable of processing both EMV- and NFC-compliant transactions. On top of this ROAM is able to leverage the business relations, partnerships and distribution channels of Ingenico. ROAM, along with the Ingenico Group has a variety of mPOS flavors within its product portfolio, able to address all card transaction types to further increase solution appeal and address all market types.

iZettle and Intuit ranked second and third respectively. Both vendors have addressed the wider market with the development of EMV capable mPOS solutions. Additionally, iZettle set up a more flexible pricing strategy to broaden its target market to include larger merchants, while Intuit continued its momentum aided by distribution partnerships with large MNO’s including AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Accompanying the mPOS terminal vendor matrix are full year 2013 market share rankings for both mPOS hardware vendors and service providers.

Research Analyst, Phil Sealy comments, “It is becoming increasingly evident that market consolidation will become a highly likely scenario. This is further reinforced by the vendor split beginning to take hold within the market whereby vendors are beginning to position themselves in either the hardware or service provider categories in an attempt to best position themselves for future competition. Vendors are now choosing where to place emphasis, whether it is in hardware development or opting to compete on the transaction side. What is for certain, is that the level of competition cannot be sustained and those with differentiated pricing strategies, innovative products lines and strong partnerships are the ones likely to succeed.”

This Competitive Assessment provides a rating of the leading mPOS vendors. A total of 21 companies were scrutinized against 10 different criteria all under the categories of Implementation and Innovation.
